American Association for Physician Leadership

Proceed Until Apprehended

Self-Study

Leaders are able to build organizational trust when the workplace is consistent, predictable, and non-threatening. Creating this type of environment might feel impossible at times, but trust within an organization can be achieved with some effort.

The “Proceed until apprehended” mindset is one approach proven to support the development of organizational trust. This approach empowers individuals to make decisions on the front lines as part of regular business practice. Since a culture of fear can develop insidiously and is often deeply ingrained before it is recognized, this course also offers insight into symptoms of a fear-based culture, and warning signs to look out for. The role emotional intelligence plays in building a culture of trust, and techniques for creating a positive culture shift within a health care organization are also discussed.

 Topics in this course include:

  • Definitions of a culture of trust and why trust matters

  • What’s encompassed in a culture of trust and actions that will get you there

  • Definitions of a culture of fear, and the spectrum of fear to trust

  • Warning signs for a culture of fear and impact of perceptions

  • Creating Cultural Change: shifting from fear to trust

This course is ideal for:

  • Physicians who currently lead a department or organization

  • Professionals looking to address and resolve loss of productivity, unhappiness, and a culture of fear and mistrust

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
