AAPL Editorial Team

October 25, 2025

Summary:

Day 2 of the 2025 Fall Institute brought together learning, wellness, and community as physician leaders explored innovative educational sessions, celebrated the launch of a groundbreaking new book, and connected through networking opportunities ranging from golf and pickleball to a meditative sound bath experience.

The second day of the 2025 Fall Institute, hosted by the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) in Scottsdale, Arizona, delivered a rich tapestry of educational content, meaningful connections, and wellness activities designed to nurture both professional growth and personal well-being.

The morning opened with a robust selection of educational experiences addressing critical leadership competencies:

  • Communications

  • Essentials of Health Law

  • Communications

  • Science of High Reliability

  • Advanced Negotiation Strategies

  • Managing Physician Performance

  • Healthcare Operations Management Academy

AAPL Bookmart: New Book Launch and Meet the Authors

A highlight of the morning was the special "Meet the Authors" session at AAPL Bookmart. Attendees lined up to meet AAPL Authors, to have copies of their books signed, and engaged in meaningful conversations.

Also featured was the official launch of Between Heartbeats and Algorithms: Reclaiming What Matters in Healthcare by Devjit Roy, MD, CPE.

With a Foreword by AAPL President & CEO, Peter Angood, MD, the book provides validation and practical guidance for physicians, nurses, medical students, and healthcare executives navigating the tensions between efficiency metrics and compassionate care.

Networking Coffee Breaks: Building Lasting Connections

Throughout the morning, strategically timed coffee breaks provided attendees with opportunities to network, decompress, and engage in informal discussions with peers. These casual interactions proved invaluable, with many physician leaders exchanging contact information, discussing shared challenges, and forming connections that would extend well beyond the conference.

The relaxed atmosphere encouraged candid conversations about leadership struggles, organizational politics, and career transitions — topics that often prove difficult to discuss within one's own institution. Several attendees noted that these unstructured moments were among the most valuable aspects of the conference experience.

Wellness and Recreation: Nurturing Mind, Body, and Spirit

Recognizing that effective leadership requires personal well-being, the afternoon schedule offered wellness and recreational activities designed to help attendees recharge and connect in non-traditional settings.

Golf Outing: A contingent of attendees headed to the pristine Westin Kierland Resort & Spa golf course for an afternoon of networking in the sunshine. The relaxed pace of golf allowed for relationship building and a break from the educational sessions.

Pickleball Games: For those seeking more energetic activity, spirited pickleball matches brought together players of all skill levels. The fast-paced, social nature of pickleball generated laughter, friendly competition, and unexpected connections across specialties and career stages.

Meditative Sound Bath Experience: In a serene setting, attendees participated in a transformative sound bath — an immersive meditation experience using therapeutic sounds from singing bowls and gongs. Guided by an experienced facilitator, participants entered deeply restorative states, releasing stress and reconnecting with their inner sense of purpose and calm.

Evening Networking: Informal Connections Continue

As the formal program concluded, attendees gathered informally for the Sunset Social for appetizers, beverages, and an award ceremony. Dinner and continued conversations followed. The combination of rigorous learning, meaningful community engagement, and rejuvenating wellness activities created an atmosphere of openness and camaraderie.

Conclusion: A Day of Holistic Leadership Development

Day 2 of the 2025 Fall Institute exemplified AAPL's commitment to developing the whole physician leader — not just technical competencies but also emotional intelligence, peer connections, and personal well-being. From financial acumen to sound bath meditation, the day honored the complexity of physician leadership and the needs of those called to this challenging work.

As attendees retired for the evening, the energy remained high, with many expressing gratitude for an organization that understands that sustainable leadership requires both professional excellence and personal renewal.

Stay tuned for more updates as physician leaders continue advancing together at the 2025 AAPL Fall Institute.
