Abstract

Managing prima donnas in healthcare organizations presents a significant challenge due to their high productivity and difficult behavior. These individuals often disregard rules, believe themselves to be exceptional, and can be disruptive to team dynamics. While their contributions are valuable, their sense of entitlement and narcissism often lead to behaviors that undermine organizational cohesion and morale. Healthcare executives face the dilemma of balancing prima donnas’ productivity against the negative impact on the team. This article explores the psychological foundations of prima donna behavior and offers a comprehensive framework for assessing and managing these challenging employees. Effective strategies include documenting behaviors, setting clear expectations, providing autonomy, and continuously monitoring progress. The goal is to align prima donnas’ behavior with organizational standards without compromising their unique contributions. Ultimately, managing prima donnas requires a nuanced approach that addresses their psychological needs while maintaining organizational integrity.
