From Autonomy to Teamwork

Self-Study

Physicians are traditionally trained to be autonomous in their thinking and actions. However, as new care delivery models emerge placing further emphasis on team-based care, physicians must develop practical teamwork skills in order to provide the best quality care for patients.

This course will guide participants in recognizing the importance of team-based care, identifying attributes and qualities of high-performing teams, diagnosing strategies to minimize risk and human error, and the significance of being held responsible for ones’ actions or the actions of others. Communication skills and practical approaches, such as the use of emotional intelligence will also be covered. Case studies will be used throughout the course to illustrate the nuances, efficiencies, and potential pitfalls of team-based care.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
