WASHINGTON, DC — June 11, 2024 — As the nation’s healthcare system evolves, the role of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is one that has become increasingly more relevant to facilitate successes within the ever-shifting landscape of patient care delivery. To better prepare physician leaders to take on the CMO role with competence and excellence, the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) has launched its new CMO Academy Certification.
This CMO Academy is a truly unique program designed and taught by individuals who have already earned the CMO title and succeeded at the CMO role during their careers. With a mix of rigorous live and online competency-based educational approaches, the Academy involves a year-long curriculum coupled with a strong network-based community of peers and faculty. Upon completion of the program, an AAPL CMO Academy Certification is awarded that will be readily recognized by contemporary health systems.
Lee Scheinbart, MD, CPE, FAAPL, a former CMO now serving as the principal faculty for the Academy states, “The CMO — whether at a hospital, clinic, insurance company, or other healthcare entity — is typically a member of the executive team and requires the proper preparation to serve effectively. The CMO Academy offers an enriching and practical experience for those seeking to serve.”
The curriculum is based upon three foundational leadership pillars: Self-Awareness, Leading a Team, and Leading within an Organization. The program covers the essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed as a CMO, including financial management, strategic planning, clinical quality improvement, risk management, crisis management, regulatory compliance, collaboration, executive presence, change management, and leadership development.
“The CMO Academy meets a clear market need right now and is entirely in-line with AAPL’s overall mission to teach and reinforce leadership skills for physicians,” said Peter Angood, MD, FRCS (C), FACS, MCCM, FAAPL(Hon), president and CEO of AAPL. “The CMO continues to be a pivotal figure in healthcare delivery systems, serving as a bridge between the clinical administrative and financial spheres of the healthcare universe.”

The core philosophy of the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) is that leadership is learned. AAPL is focused on the personal transformation of all physicians, and through them the organizations they serve. With the goal of improving patient outcomes, workforce wellness, and a refinement of all healthcare delivery, AAPL has remained the only association solely focused on providing professional development, leadership education, and management training exclusively for physicians. Since its founding in 1975, AAPL has educated 250,000+ physicians across 40 countries—including CEOs, chief medical officers, and physicians at all levels of healthcare. www.physicianleaders.org
