Guiding physicians through the complex transition away from clinical roles is a good feeling, says Dian Ginsberg.
American Association for Physician Leadership career services director Dian Ginsberg has plenty of advice for physicians considering a career transition. She shared some of it with John V. Jurica, MD, MPH, CPE, for his podcast series, Physician Nonclinical Careers.
During the 37-minute conversation, titled “The Ultimate Resource to Spark Your Transformation to Physician Leader,” Ginsberg talks about what physicians need to do to advance their careers, and how AAPL’s educational, coaching, networking and career offerings, including its Certified Physician Executive program and career psychometric assessment, can help.
“Physicians are the most educated individuals on the planet, but when it comes to actually managing their careers, this is really uncomfortable for them,” Ginsberg tells Jurica, an AAPL member since 1994. “I’m really fortunate to be in a position where I’m able to guide them through that somewhat complex process, especially when they are considering a move outside of clinical practice and into the business world.”
AAPL services are designed to assist physicians understand the types of careers for which they’re best suited, and the competencies and skills needed to be successful in formal and informal leadership roles.
“Leadership comes in all forms and shapes and colors,” says Ginsberg, a certified professional career coach. “Leadership does not mean you are a department head. It simply means that you have assumed the role as the guiding source for other individuals.”
Jurica, medical director for PromptMed Urgent Care in Waukegan, Illinois, writes a blog, the Vital Physician Executive , “that inspires, informs and supports physicians who want to pivot to a new career.” He says AAPL is among “the best resources I’ve ever found for fledgling physician leaders.”
