If physicians are going to play an important leadership role, they need to learn the “language of leadership,” says Wiley “Chip” Souba, MD, ScD, MBA.
However, “It’s not just the conventional language of vision, strategy, spreadsheets, finance, differentiation, cost control.”
“There is a whole another language, which I call the language of leading yourself,” Souba says. “Most of the barriers are because people haven’t learned this language that gives them access to themselves.”
A cancer surgeon and researcher, Souba went on to become chair of surgery at Penn State and vice president for health affairs and dean of the medical schools at Ohio State and Dartmouth. Along the way, he became known for innovative methods for creating effective health care leadership, professionalism, wellness and organizational well-being.
Souba is one of the experts leading Friday’s Beyond Burnout & Resilience workshop. His topic: “Leading Well from Within: Transforming Burnout to Resiliency with the Neuroscience of Conscious Leadership.”
