Career Essentials for Physician Leaders

Presenters: Diane Smulling Smith & Dan Dimenstein

To be an effective executive, one must master fundamental best practices, tools, experience, and skills. These include creating an executive resume and CV (understanding the differences between them), building and maintaining a personal brand, assessing readiness and marketability for leadership roles, interviewing for maximum effect, and working in partnership with executive search consultants. This session covers the basic tools needed in your leadership role pursuit, with an eye toward the unique requirements to be a physician leader in today's evolving healthcare landscape. Session moderators are experienced executive search consultants who have worked with and counseled thousands of physician leaders to help align their skills and aspirations with leadership positions. Ample time will be dedicated for Q&A.
Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the myriad elements that contribute to leadership success and how those elements are developed over time.
  • Appreciate the unique qualities that define success for physician leaders and the intentional steps and strategies physicians can employ to grow as leaders, building upon their clinical expertise and professional experiences.

A Strategic Approach to Landing Senior Leadership Roles

Presenters: Linda Komnick , Michael Anderson & Vinny Gossain

For many healthcare executives, industry restructuring – particularly the rapid rise of matrixed mega-systems – has upended the traditional vertical path of advancement. Leaders today must be more thoughtful and creative around the next steps and long-range career goals. This is true of physician leaders as well, who face new career challenges yet also a plethora of new leadership opportunities. This session looks at the current leadership landscape within healthcare and offers advice and recommendations for physician leaders to take a strategic path to senior leadership positions such as Chief Clinical Officer and CEO. What are today's health systems, medical groups, and other organizations looking for in top physician leaders? What are must-have and nice-to-have skills, and how can they be intentionally developed over time? Hosted by senior physician leadership consultants from WittKieffer, this session presents new ways of thinking about career advancement so that each role and every experience build towards a future of maximum impact. Time will be set aside for open discussion and Q&A.
Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the vast opportunities available to physician leaders in today’s evolving healthcare environment, to gain an appreciation for potential executive paths and destinations.
  • Learn tips and strategies for developing oneself from a “good” to a “great” leader, involving a more sophisticated and nuanced understanding of leadership and how success is defined and achieved for senior-level physician leaders today.

The Executive Recruitment Process: What to Know Before, During, and After

Presenters: Holly Nandan & Aaron Mitra

Executive recruitment is more than a "job search". There are unwritten rules and practices that every executive should understand when serious about searching for a new position, from knowing if you're an attractive candidate to how best to interview to making sure you're committed to a major life change. In this session, WittKieffer search consultants outline what to consider before throwing your “hat in the ring”, and then what to do (and not do) through every key phase of a search and beyond. They will also cover the role executive search consultants play in recruitment and how executives can forge relationships with recruiters for their future career advancement. Time will be set aside for open discussion and Q&A.
Learning Objectives:
  • Gain an understanding of the complexities of the executive recruiting process and the search consultant’s role in it, as invaluable information for physician leaders looking to pursue senior-level executive roles.
  • Formulate a plan for engaging with and building relationships with executive search consultants as an essential component of positioning oneself for continued leadership growth and career advancement.
